Seller's Guide

A good listing sells faster and gets a better price. Here's how to present your tack to stand out and give buyers confidence.

Take Great Photos

Photos are the single biggest factor in whether someone clicks on your listing. A few minutes spent on good photos can mean the difference between a quick sale and weeks of silence. On Horses.ie you can upload up to 10 HD images per listing, so make the most of them.

Use Natural Light

Take photos outdoors or near a window. Natural light shows the true colour and condition of the item. Avoid flash - it washes things out and hides details.

Show Every Angle

Take photos from the front, back, both sides, top, and underside. For saddles, include the panels underneath. For clothing, show front, back, and any labels or tags.

Close-Ups of Detail

Photograph stitching, buckles, straps, zips, and any hardware. For leather items, show the grain texture. Buyers want to see quality and condition up close.

Show Any Damage Honestly

If there are scratches, scuffs, tears, or repairs, photograph them clearly. Buyers appreciate honesty and it avoids disputes later. Hiding damage will only lead to returns or bad reviews.

Include Labels & Tags

Photograph any brand labels, size tags, safety ratings (especially on helmets and body protectors), care labels, and serial numbers. These build trust and confirm authenticity.

Clean Background

Place the item on a clean, uncluttered surface. A tidy background makes the item the focus. A rug thrown on a messy stable floor doesn't inspire confidence.

Write a Clear Description

A good description answers every question a buyer would have, so they don't have to ask. Be specific and honest.

What to Include

  • Brand and model - "Wintec 500 GP Saddle" is far better than "saddle for sale."
  • Size - seat size for saddles, rug size in feet, clothing in standard sizes. Be as specific as possible.
  • Condition - be upfront. "Good condition, minor scuff on right flap" is honest and builds trust.
  • Age and usage - how old is the item? Was it used daily, weekly, or only a handful of times?
  • Reason for selling - "horse changed shape" or "child outgrown" reassures buyers it's genuine.
  • Original price - if you know it, include it. Buyers can then see the saving they're getting.

Pricing Your Items

Pricing fairly means a faster sale. Here are some guidelines:

  • Research the market - check what similar items are selling for on other platforms. Price competitively.
  • 40–60% of new price is typical for items in good, used condition. Excellent or barely-used items can command more.
  • Be open to offers - pricing slightly above your minimum gives room for negotiation, which most buyers expect.
  • Bundle deals - selling a saddle with a girth and pad together? Offer a small discount for the lot. Buyers love a bundle.

Prepare Your Items

A little effort before listing can make a big difference to the price you get and how quickly it sells.

Clean Everything

Wipe down leather with saddle soap, wash rugs and saddle cloths, brush off mud and hair. Clean items photograph better and show you've cared for your gear.

Condition Leather

A coat of leather conditioner or balsam makes old leather look loved again. It brings back the colour and shows the item has been well maintained.

Minor Repairs

Replace missing buckle keepers, fix loose stitching, or replace worn straps if the cost is small. A €5 fix can add €30 to your selling price.

Gather Accessories

Include any extras that came with the item - spare gullet plates, stirrup leathers, dust covers, or original packaging. These add value and make the listing more appealing.

Staying Safe as a Seller

  • Use trusted payment methods - accept payment via Revolut or bank transfer. Avoid cheques and cash by post.
  • Don't post before payment clears - wait until funds are confirmed in your account before shipping any item.
  • Meet in a public place - if the buyer is collecting, arrange to meet somewhere safe and well-lit. Bring a friend if you can.
  • Keep records - screenshot conversations, keep payment confirmations, and note the buyer's details. It protects both parties.

What Does It Cost to List?

Just €5 for a 30-day listing with up to 10 HD photos. No commission, no hidden fees. Every seller is verified with an Irish mobile and credit card to keep the platform safe.
