Numnahs & Saddle Pads

Numnahs and saddle pads sit between your saddle and your horse's back, absorbing sweat and providing cushioning. They're one of the cheapest items to buy second-hand, and the savings are brilliant for something you'll likely own several of.

Types of Numnah & Saddle Pad

Cotton Numnahs

The everyday workhorse of the saddle pad world. Lightweight, easy to wash, and available in every colour under the sun. Shaped to fit under the saddle with girth loops and straps to keep them in place. Perfect for daily riding.

Sheepskin Numnahs

Natural sheepskin offers excellent breathability and pressure distribution. Great for horses with sensitive backs. They do require more careful washing, but a good sheepskin numnah can last for years. Popular with riders doing longer hacks across the Irish countryside.

Half Pads & Gel Pads

Half pads sit on top of your regular numnah for extra cushioning. Gel pads use silicone inserts to absorb impact, while correction pads have shims to adjust saddle fit. Ideal if your saddle needs a little help to sit just right.

Dressage Saddle Cloths

Square-shaped cloths designed to sit neatly under the longer flaps of a dressage saddle. Often seen at competitions in white, though everyday colours are widely available. The longer drop ensures full coverage.

Jumping Saddle Cloths

Shaped to match the forward-cut flaps of a jumping saddle. Slightly smaller than dressage cloths but designed to stay put during more active riding. You'll see these at every show jumping event in Ireland.

What to Check When Buying Used

Numnahs and saddle pads are relatively low-risk second-hand purchases, but there are still a few things worth checking before you hand over your cash:

  • Padding thickness - give the pad a good squeeze. If the padding has gone flat and thin, it's past its best. A numnah that's lost its cushioning isn't doing its job anymore, no matter how clean it looks.
  • Velcro tabs - most modern numnahs use velcro to attach to the saddle. Check the velcro still grips firmly. Worn-out velcro means the pad will slip during riding, which defeats the purpose entirely.
  • Girth strap loops - the loops that your girth straps pass through need to be intact and securely stitched. Torn or missing loops are a nuisance and can cause the pad to bunch up under the saddle.
  • Stains and discolouration - this is mostly cosmetic. Sweat stains are normal on used pads and often wash out. If you're buying for everyday schooling rather than shows, a few marks shouldn't put you off, especially at a lower price.

Overall, numnahs offer fantastic value on the second-hand market. Because they're so affordable to begin with, sellers often price them very reasonably. It's not unusual to pick up a quality pad for the price of a bag of carrots and a coffee.

Brands to Look For

A few brands dominate the numnah market in Ireland, and for good reason. Here are the names worth keeping an eye out for:

A trusted name across all equestrian products. Their saddle pads are well-made, practical, and competitively priced even new. Great option if you want something reliable without spending too much. Used: €10-€25.

Specialists in half pads and correction pads. Prolite pads are lightweight and breathable, designed to improve saddle fit without adding bulk. A solid second-hand find if you need to fine-tune your saddle's balance. Used: €20-€45.

Acavallo

Italian-made gel pads and half pads that are well-regarded for shock absorption. Their gel pad range is particularly popular with riders looking for extra comfort for their horse. Used: €20-€50.
