Kitting yourself out as a rider in Ireland can cost a small fortune. Buying second-hand is the smart move for most items, but there are a few pieces where you need to be careful.
The staple of every rider's wardrobe. You'll find everything from everyday yard jodhpurs to competition-grade silicone-seat breeches. Children's jodhpurs in particular are brilliant value second-hand, as kids outgrow them long before they wear them out.
Long leather boots for showing, jodhpur boots for everyday riding, and yard boots for mucking out. Good leather boots can last years and often improve with wear, making them excellent second-hand buys.
Show jackets are often worn only a handful of times, so second-hand ones can be nearly new. Riding coats and waterproof jackets are also common finds, especially useful for the Irish weather.
You'll also come across base layers (great for layering in winter), riding gloves, and competition wear like stock shirts and ties. Most of these are perfectly fine to buy pre-owned.
Helmets should not be bought second-hand unless you know the full history. A riding hat must be replaced after any impact, even if there is no visible damage. The protective foam inside compresses on impact and will not protect you a second time. There is simply no way to tell from looking at a helmet whether it has been dropped or involved in a fall. If in doubt, buy new and have it properly fitted.
Body protectors have a limited lifespan. The foam degrades over time and with use. When buying second-hand, check that the BETA rating label is still intact and legible. A body protector without a visible BETA label should be avoided. Most manufacturers recommend replacing them every three to five years, or immediately after a significant impact.
Rider clothing takes a fair bit of punishment, so it pays to inspect things properly before handing over your money.
Quality rider clothing lasts far longer and holds its value better on the second-hand market. Here are some brands worth seeking out:
German-made breeches and competition wear. Pikeur breeches are widely regarded as some of the best available, and they hold up brilliantly even after years of use. Used: €30-€80.
Hugely popular in Ireland for boots, breeches, and casual riding wear. Their long boots and jodhpur boots are particularly good second-hand buys. Used boots: €50-€150.
Solid mid-range brands that offer good value. Dublin riding boots and Toggi yard boots are workhorses, built for everyday Irish conditions. Used: €20-€60.
A reliable all-rounder brand covering everything from breeches to waterproof coats. Well-priced new and even better value second-hand. Used: €15-€60.
For helmets, if you are buying new, look for Champion, Charles Owen, or Kask. Always ensure the helmet meets current safety standards and has not been involved in any impact.
Rider clothing can be picked up for a fraction of the new price, especially for items like show jackets that see limited use. Here's a rough guide:
| Item | New | Second-Hand |
|---|---|---|
| Jodhpurs / Breeches | €40-€150 | €10-€50 |
| Long Riding Boots | €150-€500 | €50-€200 |
| Show Jacket | €80-€300 | €20-€100 |
Prices are estimates based on typical Irish market values. Actual prices vary by brand, condition, and size.
